Driving eFuel transformation through collaboration
The NorthStarH2 eFuel project in Östersund, Sweden, aims to provide fossil-free eFuel for the aviation, shipping and chemical industries. The facility will be established next to Jämtkraft’s combined heat and power (CHP) plant in Lugnvik, in the municipality of Östersund. This location offers abundant access to renewable electricity, biogenic CO2, and excellent infrastructure, including road and rail connections which will allow the fuel to be transported to the rest of Sweden and Europe. Once operational, it will produce 100,000 tons of eMethanol annually.
NorthStarH2
Collaborative approach
NorthStarH2 is developed through a partnership-driven approach. By working together Uniper, Jämtkraft and Liquid Wind each contribute with their expertise, strengths, and technologies to the project.
As the project owner, global energy company Uniper is committed to accelerating the energy transition. This project plays a crucial role in transforming the transport and chemical sectors, contributing to Sweden’s net-zero goals. Uniper has secured the land and electricity grid connections to enable the project.
The utility company Jämtkraft will supply biogenic CO2 from its cogeneration plant in Lugnvik, a key feedstock for eMethanol production.
Liquid Wind has been selected to develop the project, due to its unique expertise in eFuel facility development and will apply its standardized design and digital platform to facilitate efficient replication of the facility.
Quick facts
Production capacity: 100,000 t eMethanol / year
Capture of: 140,000 t biogenic CO2 / year
